Besides the stunning natural scenery, the enduring image of Bhutan for most visitors is the strong sense of culture and tradition that binds the kingdom and clearly distinguishes it from its larger neighbours. Take a ride in this mystical kingdom that exists almost as an enigma due to its policy of restricting visitor numbers and protecting its culture.

Biking In Bhutan - The Land of The Thunder Dragon

On arrival in Paro, and following immigration/ customs formalities, transfer to your hotel, where we will assemble our bikes.

After a short introduction and briefing for the day’s programme, we take an acclimatisation ride in the flat Paro valley. We will include a visit to Drukgyal Dzong and 7th-century Kichu monastery.

Return to the hotel for a briefing for rest of the trip.

Overnight in Paro.

Today we set off early by vehicle to the capital city of Thimphu and experience vibrant Bhutanese paintings, sculpture and textile arts. Sightseeing in Thimphu includes a visit to the 13 arts school, traditional medicine hospital, Memorial Chorten, Takin enclosure, Thimphu viewpoints, textile museum, traditional handmade paper making unit. Then continue biking up to lover’s point and then take a dirt track to Wangdi Tse monastery.

Overnight in Thimphu.

Shuttle to Dochu La mountain pass. There are panoramic views of snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Pedal down from the pass and through small villages and rice paddies into Punakha valley. Then bike to the Chimi Lhakang, a 14th-century temple, and bike further to majestic Punakha Dzong.

Punakha used to be the winter capital of Bhutan. Engage with monks in between their Buddhist meditations.
Bike back or return by shuttle.

Overnight in Punakha.

Today we will bike to Tashithang on a feeder road leading to Goendamji. It is a less frequented trail/road by vehicle and on both side, there are rich vegetation and falls under the protected national park. Takin migrates to this area from the mountains during winter. Bike to Tashithang and return back to the hotel in your bus.

Overnight in Punakha.

Today we will bike to Wangdue Phodrang on a dirt road along a river until Wangdue and then shuttle to Pelela pass. We will stop at Pelela Pass and start enjoying the downhill biking to Chendebji. Visit the chorten/pagoda.

Have lunch and then take a shuttle (210km; approx. 7hr) to Bumthang via Trongsa (2,120 m). We visit the impressive Trongsa Dzong with its observation towers overlooking the valley. In this Dzong, the Royal family originated. We shuttle to Yotongla Pass (3,425m) and descend through dwarf bamboo forest and time permitting bike down to Chumey valley.

Then shuttle Jakar after a brief stop at traditional weaving centre.

Overnight in Bumthang.

Today we have the opportunity to explore the Jakar Valley on your bike to its incredible cultural treasures. You will visit Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey, Tamshing monastery and bike on to Thangbimani village and later to Ngalakhang and visit a village house and family there.

Today you return on the same road to Pelela pass and then take the diversion road to Gangtey valley. Drive 165km; approx. 4½hr.

On reaching a pass leading to Gangtey, you will take a bike ride to Phobjekha valley.

Overnight in Gangtey.

Today you will shuttle to Gangtey monastery, visit it and then start biking on a narrow village foot trial and then on some motor able farm road through pine forests and villages. Then bike through unpaved motorable road to Khebethang. There is a nature centre funded by WWF. Shuttle to the hotel for overnight.

Today return to Paro via Thimphu (190km; 6hr drive).

You need to start really early. Stop in Wangdue and return for lunch in Thimphu via Dochula pass on a bus. We then bike down to Thimphu or shuttle to Thimphu from Dochula pass. Before that stop at Dochula pass and visit museum dedicated to our Royal family.

After lunch in Thimphu shuttle to Paro.

Overnight in Paro.

After breakfast, bike in the direction of Tiger’s Nest and hike up to the monastery.

Follow an ancient path to the teahouse, situated at 2,800m and offering superb views of the surrounding valley and the Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest Stop at the viewpoint for a cup of tea/coffee and start hiking towards Taktsang Monastery.

Then bike back to the cafeteria for lunch and then return on a bike to your hotel.

Later visit Paro fortress and museum by shuttle.

Hike 3-4hrs.
Overnight in Paro.

Early morning transfer to the airport for our departure flight.
