Iceland ~ Hidden Powers & Northern Lights Itinerary

Arrived Reykjavik, after immigration and customs clearance, transfer by Flybus shuttle to the hotel.

Reykjavík is the natural starting point for any visit to Iceland, and not undeservedly so. The capital is world-renowned for its culture, history, and natural beauty on all fronts.

Overnight at Hotel Reykjavik Natura, or similar, in Reykjavik.

Northern Lights Center – National Park of Geological Wonders (UNESCO) – Exploding Geysers – Famous ‘Golden’ Waterfall

Start the day by visiting the fascinating Northern Lights Center in Reykjavik for an exciting and informative presentation on the Northern Lights.

Onwards to Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO) where the world’s oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. We then drive to Laugarvatn Fontana where we experience a geothermal bakery first hand and dig up bread that has been cooked underground. After the tour, we sample the delicious bread, served hot from the ground with some butter.

We continue through farmland areas to the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools and high-spouting Strokkur hot spring. Last but not least, visit the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade.

Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Fluoir or similar.

Waterfalls - Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Visitor Center - Volcanic Aftermath - Black Sand Beaches

We spend the day exploring the region surrounding the towering strato-volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which is probably the most famous volcano in the world today. At the Volcano Visitor Center at Thorvaldseyri Farm, located beneath Eyjafjallajokull, you will be able to see, both in pictures and on film, the eruption and its impact on the nearby countryside, the country itself and the world.

We’ll then visit a modern Icelandic grain farm where milk and beef are also produced. Following the coast line, we will make a stop at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls.

Then it's onwards to Reynisfjara black sand beach, viewing the extraordinary lava formations and thundering waves of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Evening Northern Lights hunt.

Overnight in Iceland Hotel Klaustur in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area or similar.

Europe’s largest National Park – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs – Europe’s Largest Glacier

Visit Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty dominated by the glacier Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. The area is an amazing place to view the great contrasts between active volcanoes, mighty glaciers, powerful glacier rivers and endless flat sandy plains.

Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, one of Iceland's best known and most popular natural wonders, widely regarded as the most picturesque scenery in all of south Iceland. Enjoy  a breathtaking sight of floating icebergs on the 180-metre deep glacial lagoon.

Overnight in Iceland Hotel Klaustur in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area or similar.

Greenhouse Village - Thundering Waves - Geothermal Lagoon

We head towards the village of Hveragerdi, which is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area. Hveragerdi is often called "the flower village" because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs.

The tour continues to Strandarkirkja, a church believed to have a special power to aid success or provide good luck. Then we follow the snaking coastline past rich farming fields and deserted communities, with breathtaking sea waves to our left.

We’ll drive to the Reykjanes peninsula, where in the middle of a desolate lava field we’ll enjoy a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon (Blue Lagoon bathing fee not included), which is a unique wonder of nature with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water.

Return to Reykjavík where the evening is at your leisure.
